In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) / Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
IVF is a procedure where egg and sperm meet / fertilize outside the human body in a lab to form an embryo. This embryo is placed back into the women’s uterus to result in a pregnancy and grow into a baby
Are IVF and ICSI different?
In both, fertilisation occurs in an IVF lab to form embryos. But, the procedure is different in both, ICSI being a more advanced technique.
IVF
Single egg is placed in a petri dish with lakhs of sperms and incubated. One sperm will fertilize the egg on its own and form an embryo.
ICSI
Here, good sperms are selected by the Embryologist under a very high magnification microscope in the IVF lab. One such selected, good quality sperm is injected into each egg by the Embryologist and these injected eggs are placed in an incubator, to grow into embryos.
Who needs IVF/ICSI?
- Very low sperm count/motility.
- Zero sperm count, where TESA/PESA sperms are used.
- Moderate to severe Endometriosis.
- Unexplained Infertility, where multiple cycles of IUI have failed.
- Low ovarian reserve / Low egg count.
- Both tubes are blocked.
- PCOS and other milder conditions, where many cycles of IUI have failed.
- Age related infertility
- Where Preimplantation genetic testing is needed(In patients with recurrent implantation failures or where there is a risk of certain genetic disorders)
Procedure
Woman is given hormonal injections for over 9 to 12 days to grow as many follicles as possible, but without any risk to her health. These eggs are retrieved via Egg pickup. Each egg is injected with a selected good quality sperm. These are placed in an incubator to fertilize and form embryos. Formed embryos are cultured in the lab for 3 to 5 days. These embryos are placed back into the woman’s uterus (either 1 or 2 embryos) by a procedure called Embryo transfer, in the same cycle or at a later date.
Side-effects
Small risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, infection and bleeding related to egg retrieval. It is a safe procedure with best results, when done by experienced and skilled doctors and embryologists.
