Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF)

Recurrent implantation failure is when a woman had more than 2 or 3 failed IVF cycles, inspite of transferring good quality embryos.

What causes RIF?

The failure to implant can be due to factors related to these-

  • Egg
  • Sperm
  • Embryo
  • Uterus
  • Health conditions of the couple
  • Combination of these factors

This can affaect around 5 to 10% couples undergoing IVF. Diagnosing a cause can many times be challenging. Thorough work up and investigations should be carried out on both partners.

What is the treatment for RIF?

If a cause could be found, we can correct it. But, it is not so clear cut in most of the cases. The treatment is personalised based on the couple. The following can be done-

  • Laparoscopy/ Hysteroscopy
  • Embryo transfer according to ERA
  • PGT (Pre-implantation genetic testing) of the embryos
  • Immunotherapy
  • Using donor oocytes/ sperm
  • Surrogacy
