What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterine smooth muscle

Types of Fibroids?

Fibroids can be sub-mucosal, intra-mural, sub-serosal, fibroid polyps

Can Fibroids affect fertility?

Sub-mucosal fibroids and fibroid polyps do reduce fertility. They can cause implantation failures and miscarriages.

Symptoms of Fibroids?

Excessive bleeding at menses, lower abdominal pain/ heaviness, mass in abdomen, pressure symptoms, infertility, pregnancy complications, some might have no symptoms.

How to diagnose Fibroids?

Physical examination, Ultrasound and MRI.

What is the treatment for Fibroids?

Treatment is suggested usually for those fibroids which are causing infertility, recurrent implantation failures/ miscarriages or other problems to the patient. It is also beneficial to remove large fibroids that are > 5cms.
Medical management can be used in some cases. For women planning a pregnancy, excision of fibroids is suggested for sub-mucosal fibroids, polyps, those that are very large and disturbing/constricting the uterine cavity.
