PRE-IMPLANTATION GENETIC DIAGNOSIS / PRE-IMPLANTATION GENETIC SCREENING

This involves testing the embryos prior to implantation for any genetic defects.

Who needs this?

• When mother’s age is >35 to 38yrs to select genetically normal embryos
• Couples with known genetic defects. Here we select embryos which do not have the same defect and transfer only the healthy embryos
• Couples with history of multiple IVF failures/ recurrent implantation failures
• Couples with history of recurrent pregnancy losses
• Family history of any genetic defects
• Any previous pregnancy with chromosomal abnormalities

Procedure:

This involves making a small hole in the embryo with a laser and taking a few cells from the embryo and sending for chromosomal testing. This way we can select genetically normal embryos and transfer only those.
