Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a harmonal disorder characterised by multiple small cysts in the ovaries and anovulation. The cause of PCOS is’nt well understood. But genetic and environmental factors play a role.

How to diagnose PCOS?

At least two out of these three criteria need to be present for a diagnosis of PCOS

  • Irregular periods
  • High male harmone/ androgen levels leading to excess facial hair, acne, balding
  • PCOM (polycystic morphology of ovaries) as seen on an Ultrasound
What issues can be associated with PCOS?

Apart from irregular periods and symptoms related to high androgen levels, women with PCOS can have difficulty in conceiving due to anovulation.
They can also have increased risk of long term complications such as Insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes mellitus, heart diasease, metabolic syndrome

What is the treatment for PCOS?

Treatment depends on the age of patient, whether trying to conceive or not and the type of PCOS seen.
Women planning for a pregnancy will benefit by approaching a fertility consultant as soon as possible. The treatment approaches vary from weight reduction & lifestyle modification, Ovulation induction, IUI, Laparoscopic ovarian drilling to IVF/ICSI.
Women not planning a conception benefit from weight reduction & lifestyle modifications and medical management to a certain extent.
